It has been asked several times, "What language do you use to teach _______ skill so that we can reinforce this at home?" Up until now it has been a conversation, but then a parent asked if I could take a picture of my posters and post them. And that is why I so appreciate our parents at HPA! You all are so willing to help at home and truly make our job here much easier :-) As requested, the teaching posters...

I am so excited about this year! I can not express the amount of joy I have had working with your students and the determination that each class has had in just the last three days. Block 2 was the first class class in my teaching career to return all student homework assignments on the first day!
That being said, please know that students will have 2-3 homework assignments each week. The first assignment was given out last night. You can find a copy of it in the Homework tab. As pages are assigned, a copy of the same page will be uploaded so that you can access them any time you have questions. Thanks so much for a great start to a great year! Today we started woking on multiplying recipies by different factors to see how each ingredient changes as well. Students were handed the following rubric to follow throughout the remainder of the unit. This rubric helps them see the difference between the different levels of understanding as a hierarchy of jobs within the restaurant world. Please refer to it as often as you need to help understand the work that we are doing here in 5th Grade Math!
So this happened today. We learned two of three ways to multiply mixed numbers. Students had the opportunity to choose which solution path, either the Stacking Fractions model or the Improper Fractions model, and start to practice solving. I love this stuff!!
Today started the work of seeing fractions as divisions of the numerator by the denominator. The 9 moves from the whole number to the numerator and then becomes the dividend in the division equation. The red 3 stays as the denominator until it moves into the devisior in the division equation. Students are starting to be asked to identify the fraction as a division of the numerator by the denominator, or 9/3 as 9 divided by 3.
Home practice: Give your student a fraction and have them recite the fraction as a division equation. Examples: 15/5, 15/3, 8/4, 8/2, 6/4, 4/5, 2/3 Welcome back to reality, those of us that actually had time off to regroup, regain some sleep, and catch up on our favorite shows. We have jumped right back into the groove in Math and I wanted to let you in on what to be expecting for this month. The end of Quarter 2 is fast approaching with the last day for grades being January 13th! We are finishing up addition and subtractions of fractions in story problems (CCSS.5.NF.2) and will be digging in to multiplication of fractions by whole numbers and fractions for the remainder of the month. We will also be working with measurements that you find in the kitchen (liquid containers, cups, teaspoons, etc...) as this is the begining of our Salsa Party conversions unit. The students are so excited to be able to "make it" come to life again this month as they did with the Snacks for One party in December. HPA's Middle School Exhibition Night will be held on January 19th. 5th Grade Families are invited to this amazing event from 5-7:30pm for a "First Look" at the thinking and problem solving skills that take place in the years to follow your student. Please join us!! The 2nd Quarter Awards Assembly will be held in the HPA Gym on January 20th. More information to come on times. We also are coming up on our Winter Student-Led Conferences, where students have the time and opportunity to show thier family all the amazing learning they have done so far this year. Students are preparing thier evidence and thier courage to be ready to help their families experience the HPA 5th Grade awesomeness that is their portfolios and showcase all the great things that have been kept safely at school. Check out the letter below to get a better sence of what to expect on January 25th - 26th from 4-8pm. Note: Mrs. Eisel's Homeroom families should sign upto reserve your spot at http://doodle.com/poll/4b58xcpn2dsnvmka !!
We have started to dive into fractions and wonder about the questions, "Why are fractions important? When do we use them in real life?" This unit will be all about adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions by whole numbers and other fractions. We will also be working with measurement of metric and customary units that focus on the volume of wet and dry ingredients.
Next week, September 21st and 22nd, our first Parent-Teacher Conferences of the school year are being held. Please use the link below to sign up for a time that best works for you and your student to come in and talk about all the exciting learning that has been happening so far. We will also have current Star and 2015-2016 PARCC testing data to look over.
